Shared Hosting

What is Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting is a common type of hosting for websites. It’s where the service provider hosts multiple websites on one physical web server.

Typically, most websites don't use many server resources, so shared hosting lets you get stable service at a low cost.

Media Temple’s Shared Hosting works exactly this way, utilizing Linux as its operating system and cPanel for its server interface. By purchasing a Shared Hosting plan, you're renting a small share of space and resources on one of our servers, where you can deploy multiple websites that can be accessed over the web.

Who should use Shared Hosting?

Media Temple’s Shared Hosting is for website designers, freelancers, and businesses who are building basic websites or blogs. You can host many sites, built in numerous ways, with flexible bandwidth and storage limits, so it’s great for working with smaller clients or even experimenting.

Most sites don’t need anything close to a full server’s processing power, so they’ll run quickly and reliably with what Shared Hosting offers. But complex sites and sites with large amounts of high-stakes traffic could be better off on a different platform.

What types of sites might need more than Shared Hosting?

It’s safe to say ecommerce, enterprise-level, high-traffic, or resource-heavy sites – those that require large amounts of power and/or scalability – would be better suited for a higher-tier of hosting platform.

What if my site needs more power than Shared Hosting?

The next step up would be VPS, which stands for virtual-private server and offers bigger shares of processing power.

Beyond that, you could also get a dedicated server, reserving a server’s full power all for yourself. A public cloud using Amazon Web Services (AWS) – which we can build and manage for you – provides some unique benefits for large-scale projects as well.

Can I use SSH to access my Shared Hosting service?

Yes. After you enable SSH protocol through the Dashboard for your Shared Hosting account, you can connect via SSH using a client. Shared Hosting allows a single SSH user.
